ANDALUSIAN
Brief History: These birds are named after the Province of Andalusia in Spain and are one of the oldest Mediterranean breeds. The blue Andalusian we have today originated from crossing black and white birds imported from Anadalusia in about 1846. The incidence of black birds was increased with crossings with the Black Spanish and Minorca breeds, which substantially altered their shape from that of the early birds.
Characteristics: An upright and bold bird, with a long body, long wings and a large tail, carried quite high. A single upright comb, smooth face and legs free from feathers. They are active foragers and very fast runners. They are non-sitters and good winter/spring layers.
Plumage: Clear blue, edged with distinct black lacing on each feather.
Why do we keep Andalusians at The Garden Hen? Because they are pretty and elegant.
