ARAUCANA
History: The Araucana was produced in South America by the interbreeding of the Mediterranean breeds that the Spaniards brought over with them, with the South American breeds. They originated from the province of Arauca in Chile. They were developed to make lavender and other coloured birds in Scotland in the 1930’s by George Malcolm, their original spelling being Aracuna.
Characteristics: An alert and active breed with a light, long body, large and strong wings and a well developed tail carried at a 45º angle. A smallish head with a small pea comb and face covered with thick muffling, shanks free from feathers. The eggs are unique in that the blue green colouring permeates the shell rather than having a white inner layer.
Colours: Lavender, blue, black-red, silver duckwing, golden duckwing, blue-red, pyle, crele, spangled, cuckoo, black, white.
At The Garden Hen we keep the Lavender variety which has an even shade of blue-grey throughout.
Why do we keep Araucanas at The Garden Hen? For their unique egg colour - blue/green.
