COCHIN

History: Originally from China, when these birds were known as the Shanghai or the Cochin-China. They were brought over to Britain in the mid 19th century and were popular because of their immense size and good egg laying qualities. However, they were developed for exhibition purposes, showing off their feathers and fluff and their original characteristics were neglected.

Characteristics: Both the males and females are huge in appearance. Their breast, back and saddle are very broad and their wings are small. They have a small, soft tail, which is carried low or nearly flat. They have a small head, a single upright comb and a smooth face. Their legs and feet are covered with soft, fluffy feathers, free as possible from any stiff quills. They are friendly birds and make good broodies.

Colours: Black, blue, buff, cuckoo, partridge, white and splash.

At The Garden Hen we keep the blue variety but it’s a bit like mixing paint and we sometimes end up with black and splash varieties too.The blue is an even shade of "pigeon" blue free from lacing.

Why do we keep Cochins at The Garden Hen? Because they are of a passive nature and have lovely feathering.
