NEW HAMPSHIRE RED
History: These were bred in the American state of New Hampshire, by taking the neighbouring Rhode Island Red breed and developing it further over 30 years or so, by continual selection of breeding stock. It's body shape and colouring are very different from the Rhode Island Red.
Characteristics: A well balanced bird, medium sized with large wings, single upright comb and a smooth face.
Plumage: Chestnut red, lower neck feathers tipped with black. Main tail feathers edged with black. Undercolour light salmon.
Why do we keep New Hampshire Reds at The Garden Hen? We think that they like look typical country/farmyard chickens.
