One Day Poultry Course
The one day course is designed to cover all aspects of poultry-keeping management and husbandry, whether you are a complete beginner, or have experience with poultry and require a refresher course to help you look after and maintain your birds.
The cost of the course is £55, £20 of which is required as a non refunadable deposit. The balance of £35 is payable on the day. Student places are limited and therefore places are allocated on a first come first served basis. On the day of the course, you will be given a presentation folder with course notes and a 10% discount voucher on your next purchase from us.
The course is held indoors in a classroom setting in Windsor, Berkshire, and will involve handling live chickens.
The format for the day will be as follows:-
10.30 - 11.00 Registration and refreshments
11.00 - 11.30 Bird types and handling
After this stage you will know the good and bad points of, and the differences between, rare breeds, hybrids, bantams and large fowl. You will be shown how to hold a bird correctly, how to examine the bird for general health, how to determine a bird's age and perform tasks such as wing clipping.
11.30 - 12.00 Housing
You will be given guidelines on types of housing, space required, egg boxes, perch height etc. and tips on improving their run environment.
12.00 - 12.15 Predators
A basic guide to the wildlife that can harm your bird and tips on protecting your birds.
12.15 - 12.30 Feeding
All common feed types will be shown with the benefits and disadvantages of using them.
12.30 - 1.15 Lunch
1.15 - 2.00 Pests and Diseases
An insight into the common pests and diseases found with chickens (we will have live birds with parasites for you to see), remedies that are obtainable and procedures for keeping them at bay. Techniques such as dusting a bird correctly.
2.00 - 2.30 Breeding and Incubation
An insight into the selection of breeding stock, incubation (natural and artificial) and determining the sex of poultry. Introducing a new bird to an existing set up.
2.30 - 3.00 General Issues
Broodiness and how to deal with it. Aggression in poultry. Dispatching a bird (you will not be shown this, only describing different methods).
3.00 - 3.30 Questions
Any further questions.
4.00 Finish
We would suggest you bring a packed lunch on the day as this is not provided. Parking is limited but available. We reserve the right to cancel the course but will provide as much notice as possible (deposits will be returned if we do so).
