VORWERK
History: This breed originated in Hamburg by Oskar Vorwerk in 1900. They were imported into Britain about twenty years ago by a Mrs Wallis of Arundel who wanted to form a club for the breed.
Characteristics: An attractive, lively bird, powerful and compact. The body is as broad and deep as possible and the tail is tight held at a lowish angle. The head is medium with a single comb and the face is covered with small feathers. The legs are of moderate length and fine boned, with tightly feathered thighs. These birds are particularly suitable for utility such as smallholdings and farmyards as they are excellent foragers, small eaters and quick maturing.
Plumage: Close fitting and glossy. The hackle is black with slight buff lacing at the back of the head. The body is buff and the tail is mainly black. The undercolour is grey.
Why do we keep Vorwerks at The Garden Hen? They are very well marked, are good layers of large eggs, are not prone to broodiness and are rare.
